How to Win Prize at Culligan Pakistan's Facebook Page?

Unsafe drinking water

At a workshop held in Islamabad, the other day, on "Development of Way forward for Drinking Water Quality Monitoring and Improvement" speakers endorsed what is already common knowledge: that most of our drinking water is unsafe for human consumption.

A report of the findings of a quality testing survey, conducted by the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), informed the workshop that the Council had collected some 357 samples from different parts of the country, 87 percent of which were found unfit for drinking. 68 percent of the samples had bacteriological contamination, while 24 percent contained unacceptable levels of arsenic, 13 percent nitrate, and five percent of fluoride.

It was further pointed out that more than five million acre feet of industrial and domestic wastes were being dumped into freshwater bodies every year. Other sources of trouble include excessive use of fertilisers, and fast depletion of underground aquifers.

The government agencies add their own bit in the form of poorly maintained supply lines. An analysis of water supply in Rawalpindi, conducted three years ago, for instance, revealed that 70 percent of the supply pipelines were rusty and carelessly laid close to sewers. As a result, sewerage-mixed water was being supplied to homes.

Thus water, the sustainer of all life on this planet, has become a significant source of the spread of various life-threatening diseases. It is a major cause of infant mortality in this country. As many as 200,000 children die annually because of diarrhoea. Acknowledging, the issue, Environment Minister Hameedullah Jan, who was present at the workshop, said that in the past, more attention was given to the provision of water than to ensuring its quality.

Unfortunately, the present and future does not seem to be getting any better. There are no signs of improvement. Although legislation is in place to stop the disposal of solid waste into freshwater bodies, and toxic effluents into the ground, from where they find their way into the underground water table, implementation is uncommon.

The way forward is not very difficult, provided the relevant ministries and agencies have the will to do the right thing. The environment ministries, both at the federal and provincial levels, need to fulfil their respective responsibilities to ensure implementation of the Environmental Protection Act. This law sets rules for industrial units to limit air emissions and effluents, in line with the National Environmental Quality Standards, and prescribes penalties for violators.

They should also undertake awareness campaigns about the hazards of fertiliser overuse as well as water wastage. Equally important, water and sanitation agencies, working under city governments, must put their act together. As the PCRWR research findings show, bacteriological contamination is the major cause of disease. That means that keeping the supply system clean alone can prove to be quite effective.

Lead poisoning can cause damages to kidneys, liver, nervous, reproductive, cardiovascular, immune and gastrointestinal systems. It can also cause insomnia which can affect one's work and family life.

The water that we are being supplied by governmental agencies contains lead levels in excess of the EPA maximum contaminant level. Lead, in larger quantities, is considered a metabolic poison and causes people many untold ills.

Lead consumption in childhood can lead to a lower IQ and impairment in reading, writing, math, visual and motor skills, language, abstract thinking and concentration. Exposure to the toxic metal may contribute to crime and anti-social behavior in children.

Another element found in water that can cause many ills is MTBE. It is a chemical added to gasoline to reduce carbon monoxide emissions from automobiles. MTBE has, throughout the years, leaked into ground water.

It is important to drink quality water to prevent the side effects of these toxic metals. When it comes to your health, the quality of your drinking water is just as important as the quantity.
Insomniacs should drink plenty of water during the day to stay hydrated. Water is our internal cooling and temperature balance system. Water cures the heartburn.

Heartburn is a common disease that all of us experience in life. It may be due to escalation of acid quantity in the stomach because of some medicine or spicy food or nicotine or most probably some tension going on in life. Following quick remedies will help alleviate your heartburn.

1. The first thing you need to do is to get into ‘stand up’ position so that the acid goes down. Drink a full glass of cool water to dilute the acidity.
2. Make a mixture of 1 tablespoon of baking soda with half glass of water and drink it. If you have high blood pressure, you better avoid it.
3. Drinking milk may feel nice and cool going down but it actually contains fats and proteins that cause stomach to secrete more acids that cause heartburn.
4. Chewing mints may feel soothing and cool but it actually aggravates the heartburn symptoms because it relaxes the valve between esophagus and stomach whose purpose is to keep the acid at bay. When the valve is relaxed, more acid seeps up that causes heartburn.
5. Heartburn is not always caused by more acid in stomach. It can be caused because of indigestion. You expedite the digestion process by pouring in more juice. Adding a teaspoon of vinegar in water and drinking it can expedite the digestion and alleviate heartburn.
6. Avoid sodas, caffeinated beverages, alcohol, garlic or citrus fruits before going to bed to lessen the chances of heartburn.
7. Banana acts like antacid to sooth heartburn.

Our body comprises of around 75 percent of water. Body needs water to regulate temperature and provide the means for nutrients to travel to the organs. Water also transports oxygen to cells, removes waste and protects our joints and organs.

We lose water through urination, respiration and by sweating. If you live active life, you lose more water than if you are sedentary. Symptoms of mild dehydration include chronic pains in joints and muscles, lower back pain and headaches etc.

It may be difficult to drink enough water on a busy day. But be sure you have water handy at all times by keeping a bottle for water with you when you are working, traveling, or exercising. If you get bored with plain water, add a bit of lemon or lime for a touch of flavor.
